Carter press meet seals decontrol stance amid oil debate

President Carter repeated his commitment to remove federal price controls on oil and urged passage of a windfall profits tax and conservation measures. He faced criticism from consumer groups led by Ralph Nader associate Mark Green and Kathleen O Reilly of the Consumer Federation of America, who accused decontrol of inflationary impact. Mobil Oil was singled out by Carter as the most irresponsible corporation, while a Mobil spokesman declined comment. Milwaukee Road bid to shrink system denied by federal judge

A Chicago federal judge rejected the Milwaukee Road petition to cut 75 percent of its 9800 mile network to a 2500 mile core, saying no legal authority existed. The decision leaves the railroad’s finances and plans unsettled amid ongoing bankruptcy proceedings and looming loan requests.

UCSD researchers analyzed 181 visits from 52 couples and found men with headaches chest pains dizziness fatigue and back pain received more extensive examinations than women. Despite this the overall quality of exams did not consistently favor men in all tests.
