Backers Eye Senate Tax Reform Passage in Iowa

DES MOINES UPI Backers of the lone senate income tax reform proposal say they have enough votes to pass the bill in the upper chamber and expect the House to back down and accept the measure. Senate Democratic Leader George Kinley expects debate Tuesday as the Ways and Means Committee last week approved raises for upper level towns while offering breaks for low and middle income residents. The plan would raise Iowa's standard deduction from $500 to $1,000. The House plan would set a flat 20 percent tax on the federal income tax, drawing objections from Republicans and Gov. Robert D. Ray.
