Intoxication defendants Robert Deeny Edwin Beyer and Roy Adams each receive 10 days in jail. Speeding defendants include Dixie Heasley Emma Lassen Fred McCrossen Edward Nevendorf Ralph Hilmer Joel Hazewinkel Ann Davis Laverne Knock Albert Rohmer and Edward Daniel with fines of $10 and costs. Dr Leo Severa appears with address 2205.
Eddie Rodgers of 415 Twelfth Street SE pled guilty in municipal court to reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident. Judge James Patterson fined him 50 dollars on each count and ordered a 30 day driving prohibition though no formal license suspension was started. If he violates the sentence contempt of court may follow. A separate case reports Marlin Wilkinson of Marion, 24, fined 100 dollars and costs after failing to appear following a police arrest on April 9.
State Welfare report shows Linn county paid 1,264 old age cases an average of 58.88 dollars totaling 74,421.50, 73 blind recipients averaging 75.76 dollars, and 238 dependent children cases totaling 26,392 with an average 110.89 dollars per case. Per child average was 31.57 dollars. State averages were 57.49 old age, 73.49 blind, 116.10 ADC, with 31.99 per child.
Emil Lopata, 44, of 811 Twenty first Avenue Southwest, was jailed on an assault and battery charge. Authorities say Lopata assaulted his wife and he was to be arraigned Thursday afternoon or Friday.
The filing lists a suit for separate maintenance against Sidney J. Nance and Josephine V. Johnson. A separate suit was brought against Arthur R. Loomis for 377 dollars alleged due on a check.
The city plans a 4 million gallon earth covered reservoir on city high ground between Williams boulevard and Chandler street NW. A 2.6 mile pipeline with 24 and 20 inch mains will supply the new facility, boosting pressure and serving south side growth while expanding east Cedar Rapids water service and a future booster station at the plant.
The U S government released 200000 embargoed Salk polio vaccine doses produced by Pitman Moore and Wyeth Laboratories to restart nationwide immunizations after a two week delay. The Public Health Service said first vaccinations could resume in communities where programs were interrupted. Locations were not named.

Sir Leslie Munro warned of lingering Southeast Asia risks from Communist expansion while noting Europe stabilizes and Malaya involvement grows. He stressed Formosa remain a flash point, Philippines and Japan stability aid Pacific democracy, and Security Council influence despite vetoes. The Munros arrived in Cedar Rapids for official events before traveling to San Francisco.
The Rev. John Chirmal aged 49 a former India missionary now in Philadelphia died after a slashing at the Little Sisters of the Poor residence. He collapsed on entering the facility hours after claiming he was attacked and could not explain the motive. His bloodstained car was found parked in front of the residence with clerical garb stored in the car.
Police said two 60 pound Doberman pinschers mauled the body of 64 year old Mrs. Winifred L. Bacon found on a beach in Toms River New Jersey. The woman’s left arm was nearly torn off as the dogs frantically circled the scene.
The partly decomposed body of eight year old Jeannie Singleton was found hidden in a pine forest in Doster Michigan. She had been beaten about the head during illness and most of her teeth were missing. The body lay face down and showed no sign of being concealed.
Sadie Russell Luchterhand 74 Cedar Rapids resident for 48 years died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 4 p.m. Wednesday after a long illness. Born October 11, 1874 in Linn County she married December 31, 1938 in Marengo. Survived by husband, three sons Leou Russell Peoria Estel Russell Cedar Rapids James Russell Detroit a stepdaughter Mrs Clarence Leonard Cedar Rapids two brothers George Scott Cedar Rapids Amos Scott Marion two sisters Anna Steffy Cedar Rapids Alice Smock Davenport four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Services 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Turner chapel officiated by Rev Walter Cerka burial Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
Sarah Ellen Wagley wife of Frank R Wagley aged 59 Cedar Rapids resident for 44 years died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 11 am Wednesday after a long illness Born January 6 1885 in Armington NL she married in Des Moines September 24 1911 Surviving are husband daughter Mrs Cedric Alton twin sister Mrs Howard Miller brother Walter Murphy and granddaughter Mrs Gene Meyer She attended First Lutheran Church services at Beatty Bearle chapel at 130 pm Saturday conducted by Rev T A Youngquist Burial will be in Cedar Memorial cemetery Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 pm Thursday
Garfield Sampson 66, former compositor for the Cedar Rapids Republican, died in Los Angeles Friday. He worked many years on Omaha and Columbus newspapers, was a Printers Union member, retired last year, and moved to California. Survived by wife Mayme and son Richard of Buenos Aires.
Special to The Gazette Marengo reports a semi-trailer loaded with 75 calves and 103 sheep overturned at the junction of highways 6 and 149 about 10 30 am Thursday. Driver Joe Day of Springfield Missouri was uninjured. Ten calves and 15 sheep were killed. Authorities said a steering problem likely caused the crash while the truck was heading east down the hill on highway 6.
Police investigate the shooting of a dog owned by Paul Lewis at 601 First Avenue NE. The animal died after being brought to Spear Anthony animal clinic hours later. Al Bedell of 724 First Avenue NE admitted shooting the dog and faces charges.
James Fulton McKinnon a Cedar Rapids and Fairfax lifelong resident and retired street car motorman died Wednesday. Funeral services will be held Friday at 3 30 p m in Turner chapel with Rev Floyd Hinshaw of St James Methodist church officiating. Burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
Services for Anna Felter Matousek widow of Michael Matousek will be held at Janeba Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Friday conducted by Rev. Zdenek F. Pauk. Burial will follow in the Czech National Cemetery.
Frank J. Parizek of Amana died in a Cedar Rapids hospital Tuesday. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Barta Hesser chapel conducted by T. B. Hlubucek. Burial will be in Linwood cemetery.
Leonard J. Kriz died Wednesday at 1022 Sixth Street SE. Services are set for 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Kuba funeral home conducted by Theodore B. Hlubucek. Burial will be in the Czech National cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.
At least three people were killed and eight injured when a downtown building collapsed on another and crushed it Wednesday night. Rescue workers dug through the rubble Thursday, searching for others possibly trapped. A music store and a cafe tavern were smashed by a vacant three story structure being razed.

A Robins girl Joyce Martin 16 and her mother Willis Martin 57 were bruised in a collision with a truck two miles north of Hiawatha on highway 150. Truck driver Kenneth Adams 16 and father Harold Adams were uninjured. They were treated at St. Luke's hospital and released.
