Medicare finances improve with extended solvency projections

The annual trustees report shows the Hospital Insurance trust fund lasts to 2026, two years longer than before, while Social Security remains solvent through 2033. Moody's labels Iowa public universities' aid shift a credit negative

Moody's Weekly Credit Outlook calls the end of the tuition set aside for in-state aid a credit negative for Iowa's three public universities. It notes aid funding is key to admissions in a competitive market and says the change could affect long-term fiscal status. Regents dispute the impact, citing revenue-neutral legislation and plans to use out-of-state funds for aid. UNI would feel more impact due to 90 percent in-state enrollment, though universities expect no operational harm.

Obama pushes plan to tie loan rates to market

President Obama urged tying federal student loan rates to the market with annual adjustments and a fixed life loan period. He criticized the House plan capping the rate at 8.5 percent and warned of higher costs if Congress does nothing. The White House would fund Pell Grants, expand work study, and offer income based repayment while senators seek a longer term solution.
