Iowa WPC Commission urged to appeal federal water rules

The Iowa Water Pollution Control Commission voted to recommend to Gov. Ray that Iowa appeal the federal order mandating secondary treatment for sewage. The panel backed Burlington's stance that costly upgrades may do little for river quality, citing state rights and legality concerns.

Three Decorah Residents Injured In Weekend Crashes

Three Decorah area residents were hospitalized after weekend auto accidents. Thomas Hill 17 and Catherine Hill 18 were treated for cuts in Winneshiek county hospital and Mary Costigan 46 of Lawler was treated in New Hampton hospital for lacerations. Edwin Wicken 16 of Decorah, who drove the car in the Skyline road crash, was charged with failure to have his car under control.

Eight Die In Iowa Holiday Traffic Crashes

Eight persons die in Iowa traffic accidents during a 54 hour Memorial Day weekend death watch from Friday 6 p.m. to Sunday midnight. Illinois fatalities include Webster City state Legion commander William Guthrie and Richard Dybdahl. Des Moines Man Elected President of Iowa Association of the Blind

Sylvester Nemmers, 49, of Des Moines, was elected president of the Iowa Association of the Blind at its Des Moines convention. Curtis Willoughby, 28, Cedar Rapids, was named first vice president and a Collins Radio Corp. engineer, Don Morris, 31, Des Moines, became second vice president. Other officers include Mrs. Creig Slayton, Coralville, secretary, and H. E. Stutters, Clarion, treasurer. Drive safely.

Iowans Lobbying For 609 Proposal In Washington Trip

A group of about 80 college students and Iowa residents lobbied in Washington for senate amendment 609 an antiwar measure urging troop withdrawal and ending U S financial support in Southeast Asia by mid 1970. The delegation represented the University of Iowa Drake Grinnell and St Ambrose colleges and planned meetings with about 25 senators and representatives. They also sought support for lowering the voting age to 18 and planned to stay in the capital through Thursday.

The Rev James Groppi a militant civil rights leader preached his farewell sermon at St Boniface Roman Catholic Church in Milwaukee He told his racially mixed parishioners that he would be more militant if given a chance to do over again Groppi and three white priests are leaving to be replaced by a Negro priest team.
