Wallis Dress Recalled by Mainbocher Designer

Joy Miler recounts designer Mainbocher’s memories of the wedding gown worn by Wallis Warfield Simpson at the 1937 Windsor wedding. The dress, later donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was a two piece silk crepe design known as Wallis Blue. Mainbocher notes the dress’ secrecy and its influence on contemporary fashion. Also mentioned are fittings near Tours and anecdotes about Simpson’s collaboration and demeanor.
