A 63 year old French inventor Michel Le Roy unveils a triangular retractible metal beam that can roll up on a drum and extend to 80 feet lifting 800 pounds for radar antennae. The beam attracts U S Air Force interest and could aid mobile towers for power lines and drilling.

Twelve men from The Gazette area arrived in Seattle on their way home from military duty in the Far East aboard the transport Gen William H Gordon. Clarence A. Yoch 46 died at home Sunday night at 436 Fourth Avenue SW Cedar Rapids. Born Newhall April 10 1890 he lived in Cedar Rapids ten years and served 14 months overseas in World War I. Survived by wife Merle Forsyth daughter Maxine three brothers and two sisters. Rohn chapel service 2 p.m. Wednesday with Rev Frazer A Thomason Cedar Christian church. Burial Evergreen cemetery Vinton. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Mrs William Flynn 72 of 421 Eighth Ave SW Cedar Rapids died in a local hospital after a long residence here. Survived by son Joseph of Milwaukee two daughters Gladys Flynn of St Paul and Mrs E J Huron of Cedar Rapids six grandchildren two sisters Mrs Harry Happy of San Jose and Mrs Frank Pepin of Spooner Wis. Golden wedding celebrated in 1950. Services at St Patrick church Tuesday 9 am with Rosary Monday 7:30 pm and Knights of Columbus 8 pm at Teahen chapel. Burial in Mt Calvary cemetery.
Lawrence Peterson of Cedar Rapids died in St Peters hospital after retirement. Born April 30 1895 in Council Bluffs he worked as a highway contractor and served in World War I. Surviving wife Lucy and several relatives. Services Wednesday at Myer funeral home Council Bluffs. Lola Kibler Cedar Rapids resident fatally injured in a two car crash near Clarence funeral to be announced. Burial Oak Hill cemetery. Surviving daughter and son and siblings. Services pending arrival of son from California.
Services planned for Thomas Robert Wadden of 1010 Center Point Road NE Cedar Rapids a longtime resident and machinist at Universal Engineering for five years who was killed on Saturday with details to be announced by the family.
Jorgen Thomsen age 52 of 1414 Third street SE died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 4 10 p m Saturday after a brief illness. Born in Denmark September 18 1901 he came to Cedar Rapids in 1928 and was a member of the Eagles and Moose lodges. A brother and a sister in Denmark survive. Kuba funeral home to announced. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p m Tuesday.
Services for Mrs Henry Burish of 192 Twentieth Avenue SW Cedar Rapids who died Saturday will be at Janeba funeral home at 2 Tuesday conducted by Rev Milo Filipi of the Czech Reformed and Evangelical church. Burial is Cedar Memorial cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Monday.
At Camp Dodge 700 boys in the Hawk Eye Boys State convened to name the governor and party slate. Nominations spanned Nationalists and Federalists with figures from Ottumwa Waterloo Des Moines Hawarden and other towns. a state highway patrol and merit system were also organized. James Adams heads the highway patrol with sergeants named from multiple towns.

The Weather Bureau reported May was the driest since 1948 and the fourteenth driest on record with 2.22 inches of rain. Average temperature was 60.4 degrees, about one degree below normal, with late heat offsetting earlier cool spells.

Three University of Iowa students from Oskaloosa were linked to a months long shoplifting spree across Iowa City and Cedar Rapids. Jean Eda burn 19 Jerry Smith 17 and Richard Morrison 18 faced Linn County charges after being arrested by Iowa City detectives. They admitted thefts from drugstores and other outlets including a case of sardines and pilfered restaurant items. They were released on bonds then jailed again on new charges with FBI questioning over falsified draft cards.
Officers reported Van Antwerp was found seated in his car at the scene. A five inch knife was discovered in the vehicle, detailing potential danger in the area.
William R. Petty 56 of 1237 Lake Avenue NE waived to the grand jury on a charge of lascivious acts with a child. Justice Charles Benesh set a $1,000 bond and Petty remained jailed after failing to post. Accused of May 24 offenses against two Cedar Rapids girls aged four and six. police arrested him Sunday.
Edward Michaelson of New Providence Hardin county was charged with false uttering of a $40 check in Linn county. He waived to the grand jury before Justice Charles Benésh, bond set at $1,000. Michaelson was arrested in Hardin county and returned to Cedar Rapids. The alleged check was passed at Globe Machinery Company on April 30.
Frank Alfred Nissen 36 of 1031 Second Street SE and Thomas A Kennedy 64 with no permanent address were arrested for drunk driving Monday. Kennedy pled guilty and was fined 300 dollars and costs by Judge Charles Penningroth. Nissen faced arraignment later. Nissen was chased after a red light incident at First Avenue and Fifth Street East. Kennedy was arrested by Patrolman Richard Caylor for erratic driving on Marion Boulevard and First Avenue.
The will of Anna Swanda who died May 20 was admitted to probate Monday. Her husband was appointed executor without bond and named heir to a residence at 2950 Madison Street NE. Bequests include Libbie Janko and Lu mir Janko as sisters with postal savings, Olga Kolarik as sister, nephews Robert Kolarik and Lumir Janko, niece Frances Batcheller, with equal gypsum stock shares to them. Remainder to be divided equally among Libbie Janko Lumir Janko Alma Janko and Anna Janko. Also noted are four district court account suits filed Friday afternoon: L. O. Dickey vs. Vernon Clark for $125.89. L. O. Dickey vs. Mulhousen for $138.20. Commercial Standard Insurance Co. vs. Harold G. Kessler for $117.44. St. Luke's Hospital vs. John and Goldie McKenna for $798.08.
Virgil Landry and Cecilia Landry saw their divorce petitions dismissed by Judge Charles Penningroth after a May 1920 trial found both parties at fault. Other filings include Edleman suing Bal lou for 120 dollars and Hidder suing the Sla mans for 264.42. Three default account judgments totaled 164.82 against LeGrange, 166.39 against Bell, and 301.91 against Fulmer.
Ted Van Antwerp, 40, of 811 Ninth Street SE, jailed after being charged with assault with intent to commit rape. An 18 year old Cedar Rapids girl alleged he attacked her with a knife on a country road off Highway 30 east of Cedar Rapids. She led officers to the scene after escaping and calling a relative who notified the sheriff.

Wayne Hoffner an 18 year old from Clarence was in critical condition at Mercy Hospital after an early Sunday auto crash on highway 38 north of Olin. He suffered a fractured skull and head injuries when his car struck guard rail posts and a cement post on a bridge. A piece of angle iron penetrated the vehicle and Hoffner was thrown onto the pavement.
