81-Year-Old Great-Grandmother Receives Doctor of Letters
Mrs. Lillian Hurlburt Gist, Cedar Falls, aged 81, was awarded the Doctor of Letters at MacMurray College for Women’s 86th commencement. A MacMurray alumna of 1875, she pursued graduate work at Claremont at 79 and earned a Master of Arts last year in classics and philosophy. She and her husband, W. W. Gist, were prominent in education circles and G A R activity in Iowa.

State to fund city highway bills under state aid plan
The state highway commission may finance city streets carrying state routes as cities seek relief from costly paving. Administrative engineer Coykendall outlined funding limits with annual revenue of 15.5 million, eight million for debt service, three and a half million for maintenance, leaving four million for federal matching and improvements. He noted 342,756 was spent in cities last year and cited prior refunds and extensions on 391 miles of city paving linked to state highways. A Bloomfield delegation urged new paving on thirteen blocks, seen as just by the commission.

Iowa Traffic Toll Hits 154 for Year
The death of Mrs. Edward S. Gay, 37, of Des Moines, brings Iowa’s 1936 highway toll to 154. Two other fatalities occurred over the weekend. Gay was the Des Moines crash victim, following Robert Hodgins, 48. Kristian Larson, 41, Osage, and James Krogh, 26, Cedar Falls, were holiday victims in separate crashes, Krogh dying near Sumner, Iowa, and Larson in Osage.

Hale merchant Roy C. Rummell died Sunday at 59 from heart disease. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church in Olin, his former home. Rummell operated a local grocery for ten years. He was born in Olin and married Maude Walker in 1918.

Iowa City Nurse to Speak at National Nurses Meeting
Miss Helen Willis, nursing director at the Psychopathic Hospital in Iowa City, will present a paper on psychiatric nursing at the American Nurses Association biennial convention in Los Angeles June 22 to 26. Willis, a 1918 Central Maine graduate and 1932 Western Reserve alumna, organized the Cleveland hospital’s psychiatric program and has since led an Iowa course for nurses in psychiatry.
