Cedar Rapids Escalators Removed After 2008 Flood

The June 2008 flood damaged all downtown Cedar Rapids escalators. Most were removed during recovery and replaced by stairs at the U.S. Cellular Center Town Centre and Armstrong Centre. Only the U.S. Bank building at 222 Second Ave SE had escalators restored. Historian Mark Hunter notes the loss.

Filtered cigars become tax workaround for smokers

Shoppers at the Cigarette Outlet in Cedar Rapids buy Wrangler filtered cigars in 20 packs for $1.27 including tax. The packs resemble cigarettes and undercut Hy-Val by $2.48 and Marlboro by $4.30, fueling a six to seven month surge in popularity per manager Andrew Beaupre.

G R study says Second Avenue closure feasible for PCI build

The Cedar Rapids traffic study by Anderson Bogert Engineers finds the city street system has sufficient capacity to handle the proposed Second Avenue SE closure for Physicians' Clinic of Iowa and likely other nearby development. It notes a fairly generous growth in traffic and is prepared for PCI St Luke's Hospital and Mercy Medical Center as part of the Cedar Rapids Medical District plan.

Miss Iowa USA throws out first pitch in D C game

Katherine Connors Miss Iowa USA attended Nationals Park and tossed a ceremonial first pitch to Nationals reliever Miguel Batista before the Phillies Nationals game. Batista had previously joked about Miss Iowa in an on field interview, and Connors posed for photos wearing a red Nationals jersey and a sash.
