Train Crash Kills Two In Altoona Iowa

A head on collision between two Iowa Interstate freight trains in Altoona killed two crewmen. About 1,000 people were evacuated nearby as a fire on a denatured alcohol tank car burned safely. Officials warned of potential explosion risk while Amusement park rides remained open for thousands nearby.

Urban Iowa counties show higher cancer rates than rural areas

A study by the State Health Registry at the University of Iowa finds Linn County among the most cancerafflicted urban counties with lung cancer rates exceeding statewide levels. Smoking drives the urban rural gap while overall Iowa cancer rates run about 321 per 100 000, with Linn at 362 and Polk higher for lung cancer.

74 year old Alabama man drives 600 miles for dentist visit

Frank Collier, 74, of Centreville Alabama, left for a Birmingham area dentist appointment at 4 AM Friday. He was found 17 hours later lost in Indiana about 600 miles from home, later saying he planned to reach Centreville. Police blocked his car on Indiana 332 near Muncie and noted the odd route before determining his mistaken path.

Officials push bigger work release center in Cedar Rapids

Cedar Rapids officials seek to replace the cramped work release center at 1427 Fourth Ave SE with a larger facility on 16th Avenue and Rockford Road SW to house up to 60 male parolees. They argue closer supervision improves behavior and safety, while opponents fear nearby inmates. Currently twenty men live at the existing two story center which also serves ten drunken drivers.

Neighbors Quiet as Iowa City Work Release Center Moves

Duane Lewis recalls initial worry when Hope House work release center shifted a short distance within Iowa City. The MECCA treatment facility lies south of Hope House, with Hilltop trailer court nearby, both in a neighborhood near 16th Avenue SW. The Cedar Rapids center operates under the 6th Judicial District Department of Correctional Services.
