Armed Forces C R Man Earns Medal For Services in Vietnam

Captain Larry D Showalter son of Mr and Mrs G L Showalter 2604 Primrose lane SW awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for search and rescue in Vietnam on February 7. He flew an F 4D in enemy territory under heavy fire aiding the recovery of two downed navy pilots now based in Spain. He has three years in the air force.

Crash Kills Six Airmen in Arkansas Pasture

Witnesses described an Air Force transport plane falling and exploding in a northeastern Arkansas pasture at sundown, killing all six aboard. Some said it appeared to be on fire before impact, with several loud bursts heard as it descended near an abandoned rail bed.

Two youths charged in Bever Park Zoo vandalism incident

Cedar Rapids police charged two boys aged 14 and 17 with malicious vandalism at Bever Park Zoo’s Old McDonald’s Farm last Friday. They were processed and released to parents. cases referred to probation. Authorities say cages were tipped, two pigs injured, one guinea pig killed, and other animals sprayed with water.

Burglary at Rural C R House While Family Vacated

Thieves pried off a screen and entered the basement of a rural C R household while the family was away on vacation. A mink, suede coat, sweeper, gloves, and a suitcase valued at about $900 were stolen.

Man Accused of Assault and Battery in City Fire

James K Fisher, 39, of 1001 First Street SW, arrested Thursday for assault and battery. He posted $110 bond and was scheduled to appear August 6 in municipal court. Information signed by Stavres Hades, 812 Fourteenth Street SE, alleges Fisher struck a man in the eye, breaking two bones, July 16 at Penick and Ford where the two men work.

Man Gets Jail Term on Assault

John R. Whaley, 27, of 1316 First avenue NW, was sentenced to 30 days in the Linn county jail on a charge of assault and battery. Whaley was arrested Thursday night on information signed by Joyce A. Moraine, 150 Sixth street NW, who charged that Whaley struck her and kicked her Thursday at her home. He was sentenced in Cedar Rapids municipal court by Judge John B. Reilly.

Three Charged in Federal Bond Case in Dubuque

FBI agents arrested three Dubuque men on interstate transport of stolen U S savings bonds and firearms. Gary Kiefer 63 William Harry 27 and Gary Harry 223 were jailed in Dubuque County under 10000 dollar bonds each.

Showing Car to Potential Buyers Beating Occurs

Cedar Rapids man Alva E. Van Alst 32 was beaten while showing a car he had for sale. Police said two men came to his home about 11 p m and attacked him as he opened the hood. Van Alst was treated at St Luke s hospital for a fractured nose and an inner mouth laceration before being released. One assailant was described as heavy set about 25, wearing dark trousers and a vest. the second man could not be described.

Gets Plea Time On Unlawful Use Of Telephone

Kenneth E. Jenn, 37, of 207 Twenty-seventh Street NE, was arrested on two counts of unlawful use of the telephone. He is accused of making threatening or obscene calls to Jerry Sparks and Dean Strnley during the last year. Jenn appeared in municipal court and was given until Aug. 6 to move or plead to both charges. He is held in Linn County jail on $500 bond per charge.

Jury Claim Rejected by Judge Victor

Special to The Gazette Iowa City Judge Harold D. Victor ruled against Stephan D. Ford seeking trial by peers. Ford, an assistant professor of business administration, faced a felony charge of malicious injury to buildings and fixtures from a protest at the University of Iowa ROTC program. The judge held the Johnson county jury list valid and found no due process violation.
