City council approves higher budget with tax relief planned
The council Finance Committee backs a revised 89,8hS budget for 1984 outlining increases in spending but a reduced tax levy. Estimated income rises to 522,424 from 434,230 last year due to new revenue from a swimming pool and garbage collections. The tax millage is expected to drop from 25.8 to 26.62 mills. A public hearing is set for Aug 12 at 7 PM.

Marion Man Injured When Car Hits Bridge
Kenneth Db. Grout, 27, of Marion, was listed in fair condition at Se Urke's hospital after his westbound car struck a bridge abutment about 4:58 am on highway 14 three miles west of Springville. Grout suffered facial lacerations and possible internal injuries. Deputy Gene Clatterbuck investigated.

Fire destroys Mederville farm buildings and livestock
A fire at the William Crane farm near Mederville in Clayton county destroyed the barn milking equipment and a silo. Nine rabbits and portions of the year's stock were lost. Mrs Sam Hubbard observed flames from her garden and alerted the scene.

Hultman Rules Standard Time For Iowa Bars
Des Moines AP reports Attorney General Evan Hultman ruled liquor by the drink must operate on Standard Time even in areas observing Daylight Saving Time. The ruling, requested by Rep. John L. Duffy, enables eastern Iowa bars to stay open an extra hour when DST is in effect. State liquor laws require midnight closures on Saturdays and Standard Time must govern liquor laws.
