Reed Reports Improved Corn Prospects From Heavy Rain
Federal forecaster Charles D. Reed says recent rains improved corn outlook in Iowa though heat waves limited gains. He notes most fields tasseled, about half silked with some silk scorch, and warns another heat spell could reduce yields. Turning Pigs In Cornfields Advised For Disease Control
Federal official Dr. Joe W. Giffee urges hog farmers to move infected or at risk pigs to cornfields for sanitation. He says shaded, dust-free ground in cornfields or stubble provides cleaner conditions and reduces intestinal and lung infections. Temporary shelters can be built with posts, fencing and straw, and fields should be cleared of two-shoot cockle burr after rains. Hog cholera outbreaks are reported across numerous Iowa towns, with swine erysipelas near several cites.
