Remodel boom in Cedar Rapids apartment housing noted

City Building Inspector Leefers reports a sharp rise in remodeling permits for multiple dwellings in the first six months of 1938, with valuation up from 2,650 to 26,100 and a permit count up from five to twelve. He says renters tire of shabby low priced apartments and builders respond by upgrading existing housing. Total remodeling and repair costs for Cedar Rapids reach 112,785 in six months, slightly below 1937.

A basement recreation room in the Novak home at 1831 K street SW was transformed from a weather playroom into a social space. Twenty four men gathered there, as a stoker furnace and air conditioner replaced the old coal setup and a plywood bar, laundry area, and fruit closet were added. Indirect lighting with 100 watt bulbs completes the updated space.
