In Cedar Rapids landlord Robert Miell pleads guilty to 18 counts of mail fraud and two counts of perjury related to a damage deposit scam. Sentencing is set September 2 and 3 in U S District Court after a delay to allow objections to the pre trial investigation report. Miell is 54 and resides in Cedar Rapids.
Iowa City police say three men were within 15 feet of each other Friday night as a deputy shot John Deng after Deng stabbed Bohnenkamp. Deng, a homeless man carrying Texas ID, died. Bohnenkamp was wounded but declined interview.
About 700 mourners, including many law enforcement officers, gathered at First Assembly of God Church in Cedar Rapids to honor Linn County Sheriff’s Deputy Mark Taylor who died after a heart attack and car crash. Taylor, 46, served 23 years and was a certified accident reconstructionist. He is survived by his parents, a sister, and a niece, with burial at Linwood Cemetery.
Public response to Olivet Neighborhood Mission's clothing appeal has filled storage space at 237 10th St NW. Director Jan Thomas says donations are full but urges residents to remember the drive. the next clothing drive starts September 15.
