Slight Stock Gain Fails to Lift Market Outlook
New York stocks drifted higher on Friday after a three day decline as volume stayed light. The Dow Jones average of 30 industrials rose 2.04 to 981.43 with many names showing narrow gains and a stabilizing tone from a broad rate cut in bank lending. Citibank and others joined the rate reduction from 7 1/4 to 7 percent as trading on the NYSE remained subdued and the composite index nudged up slightly.
