Army Air Corps celebrates 30th birthday at Wright Field
Thirty years after the air corps birth in 1909 the Arlington field marks a milestone as engineers target speeds near 500 mph for future warplanes. From Wright brothers first aircraft to a 2 000 hp engine for long range jets, the service plans rapid expansion. In 1903 the Wrights built the first Army aircraft in Kitty Hawk and the 1909 contract launched military aviation. World War I pushed speeds to 150 mph and the current rearmament program aims to 4 500 airmen and 5 500 planes in the near term.
