Coralville Outflow Drops To 11 000 Cfs

Outflow from the Coralville reservoir was reduced from 12 000 to 11 000 cubic feet per second Tuesday morning. The move is expected to lower Iowa City river level by seven tenths of a foot while inflow averages 8 800 cfs. Reservoir elevation sits near 709.3 feet with further outflow cuts planned as conditions change.

Courthouse News Delay Retrial in Murder Case

Richard Paul Lawrence’s murder retrial is delayed to September or October after a Linn County district judge granted a defense continuance. Defense said conflicts prevent trial by the August 18 date. Lawrence, 38, of Cedar Rapids, was convicted in 1967 of second degree murder for the December 20 1966 Marion supermarket construction site killing. conviction reversed by the Iowa Supreme Court last May for public trial instruction issues.

Hawleys sue for $125000 over Alburnett crash

George Hawley and Suzanne Hawley of Alburnett sue Ward F. Swift of Cedar Rapids for $125000 over a traffic accident south of Alburnett on August 20 1967 alleging the defendant failed to heed a stop sign and claiming permanent injuries.

Harold DeSotel, farmer east of Troy Mills, sues Lester Koster in Linn district court for 75000 alleging alienation of affections. DeSotel claims Koster drew Betty DeSotel away from him about May 1 and May 5, court filing cites 1945 marriage date and seeks 50000 actual damages and 25000 punitive.

Insurance Firm Denied Costs In Cedar Rapids Case

Federal Judge Edward J. McManus denied Life Insurance Co. of North America’s move to assess court costs against Cedar Rapids woman Marilyn Cortez in a protracted declaratory judgment dispute over a $13,000 life policy. The insurer sought costs after a 1967 jury favored Cortez. 1968 rulings had favored the company on the main issue but Cortez recovered $85.83 for an advance premium. The firm must file any cost review motion within five days of the clerk’s action.

Two East Iowans Earn Medals for Viet Nam Action

Two area men earned military honors for service in Vietnam. Sfc. Robert O. Noggle, Elkader, received the Bronze Star for ground operations against hostile forces, stationed at Ft. Eustis. Pfc. John W. Frame, Iowa City, earned the Purple Heart for wounds near Tay Ninh. Seven others enlisted or entered training in the armed forces with postings from San Diego to Camp Pendleton and Paris Island.

Oberthien Seeks Re election as Cedar Rapids Safety Commissioner

Cedar Rapids safety commissioner John Oberthien 48 of 164 Westview Drive NW announced Tuesday he will run for a second term in the fall municipal election. He previously directed public works for five and a half years. Oren A. Carter also filed for the post. If more than two candidates run, voters will decide in the Oct. 21 primary, with the general election on Nov. 4. Nomination petitions must be filed by Oct. 7 with 368 voter signatures.

Riedesel arraigned for draft evasion in Des Moines

LeRoy A. Riedesel of Clarence appeared before U S Commissioner K W Fuelling on charges of failing to report to a civilian job as ordered by his draft board. Indicted earlier by a Des Moines grand jury, he faced a two year civilian service at Goodwill Industries in Des Moines and was released on a 1000 dollar unsecured bond.

Fair Trade Show Cause Hearing Set by Judge McManus
