Farmers' Net At Mid-Year Behind 1963

ASHINGTON (UPI) The agriculture department said Wednesday net farm income for the first half of 1964 was at an annual rate of 12.4 billion, down about 19 percent from the first six months of 1963. Gross farm income in 1963 was a record 41.7 billion, with government payments near 1.686 billion. Projections show 1964 farm payments and direct subsidies rising, while receipts from marketings lag behind 1963. Production expenses through June 1964 ran higher, offsetting gains in gross income. total farm expenses January-June 1964 were about 29.7 billion.

Independence Non-Livestock Winners Named at Fair

Iwo purple ribbon entries for state fair competition were selected in wood working by Clyde Anderman of Hazleton and entomology by Pat Reedy of Jesup. Reedy's entry also advanced in Monday's girls 4 H food and nutrition judging. Other food exhibits from Rowley, Oelwein, Jesup, Stanley, Walker, Winthrop, Fairbank, and Tipton qualified for state fair. A record 780 food and nutrition exhibits were entered, per Fanet Hildebrandt.

Linn Conservation Queens To Be Named

Linn county stages the Linn Conservation Queen contest nominees for county titles will attend a Linn fair program on Thursday night. Named are Barbara Burton Alburnett Ratio nalys Mt Vernon Dolores Jean Martin Fairfax Ruthann Peterson Mar vin and Jeanne Trachta Cedar Rapids. The two county winners advance to the regional contest on August 19 at the All Town fair Cedar Rapids.

Friday Is Dairy Day At Linn County Fair

Central City’s Linn county dairy princess Shirley Kay Burats will preside over Dairy Day at the Linn county fair on Friday. She will award ribbons to junior dairy show winners and help dispense free milk provided by the Linn county dairy promotion committee. The committee will also provide free milk at a Thursday evening barbecue for exhibitors at the fairgrounds.

Elm Disease Now in 51 Iowa Counties

Elm disease is established in Marion Webster and Crawford counties bringing the Iowa total to 51. Combating Dutch elm disease is the property owner's responsibility. Dead or dying elms must be removed promptly to prevent spread. Summer beetle broods emerge and may increase next spring, raising infection risk. Homeowners should prune and burn prunings from healthy elms to reduce fungal and beetle transmission.

Linn County DHIA Picnic Set for Aug 6 at Lake Madridge

Members of the Linn County Dairy Herd Improvement Association plan a picnic and recreation day on Thursday August 6 at the Lake Madridge shelterhouse. Albert Scot of Marion and George Reyhons of Mt Vernon lead the arrangements committee.
