The first millage increase in six years is proposed in Linn county's 1960 budget of over $3.5 million. The plan was presented to taxpayers Tuesday by the board of supervisors.
The 1960 Linn County budget totals 3 520 1960, up 342 103 from 1959. A tax increase of 289 903 is projected, with 2 411 958 to be raised by taxes and a public hearing set for August 12 at 10 30 a.m. in the Linn County courthouse.
The Queen Elizabeth, the world’s largest liner, collided with the freighter American Hunter about 3:29 p.m. off Brooklyn near Coney Island as both ships were en route to Europe. The 83,000 ton liner reported uncertainty about the collision’s severity. The American Hunter is 16 years old and 10,460 tons. Coast Guard officials provided details.
Kenneth Klein, 45, of Webster was injured in a Kalona horse show riding accident. After completing the barrel race and placing second toward the prize circle, his horse reared and fell, goring him with the saddle horn. He underwent surgery at University hospitals, Town City.
Albany Iowa US authorities report a vandal placed a steel plate with a one inch knife blade on highway 80 one mile north of Albany. The device slashed tires of at least 25 motorists, some receiving two flats as drivers used spares. One motorist burned by the weapon had just bought new tires.
New York AP report ties United States Steel profits to a union charge that the industry's stance against wage demands is a phony inflation issue. The steelworkers strike continues with no side change per a mediator, and a looming aluminum strike threat is postponed. Union president McDonald calls profits astronomical and says the strike was forced by management.
In Hawaii the GOP captured 3 of 5 top offices and won control of the state Senate. Republican William F P Quinn defeated Democrat John A Burns for governor, with James K Kealoha elected lieutenant governor. Hiram L Fong and Oren E Long won congressional seats while Daniel K Inouye won the lone House seat. Democrats had held territorial sway, and Quinn overcame a 20,000 vote primary deficit.
In Palermo Italy Communist backed Silvio Milazzo was re elected president of the island government as the Christian Democratic party suffered a sharp setback in the Sicilian regional assembly vote Tuesday night.
Cedar Rapids residents faced a blistering afternoon as the thermometer reached 89 degrees at 2 p.m. accompanying a high humidity of 68 percent. While temperatures rose, humidity showed a slight decline by midday, signaling a humid but easing peak in the heat wave.

Laster’s school board tenure began on December 6 on a segregationist platform and followed a recall election in May over hiring practices.
President Eisenhower said Nixon may discuss with Soviet Premier Khrushchev the possibility of a U.S. visit but cannot issue an invitation. He noted Nixon conducted himself well in the Soviet Union and warned public opinion must be prepared for any Khrushchev visit to avoid incidents. He also touched on steel wages and the Geneva talks with no clear progress toward a summit.
