Heavy Weights Face Severe Discrimination in Hog Prices

Ray Anderson reports on unusually wide price spreads in Iowa and southern Minnesota hog markets. Heavy hogs sell for much less than light hogs, with up to $2 per hundredweight differences and up to $1.85 between 180–220 lb and 325–350 lb butcher hogs in Iowa. Receipts surged as farmers finish harvest and market more hogs, with July expected to nearly match June totals. Prices fluctuated after a Tuesday peak, with fresh pork prices high yet below last year’s levels. Analysts see ample summer marketings delaying further price increases, while spring pig gains remain strong.
