Fear 13 Drowned As Barge Capsizes
A 2000 ton sand and gravel carrier named Material Service sank after listing to port near Calumet Harbor while en route from Lockport to Chicago. Survivors including First Mate Johnson described clinging to wreckage as lifeboats were unusable. The vessel, owned by Smith Putnam Navigation and chartered to Material Service, was about ten years old and diesel powered with home port Sturgeon Bay.
