Map Shows Areas Of Greatest Corn Damage In Iowa
A Des Moines fed statistician Leslie M. Carl maps corn ruin areas across Iowa. About sixteen counties near Missouri and Nebraska show near total failure while thirty seven counties have 50 to 80 percent ruin. Carl traveled 1100 miles and says Iowa may produce less corn than in 1934. He notes clover alfalfa seed kill and drought drying pastures. Northeast Iowa has best corn prospects. Hail damage reported in several districts. The small grain crop is near normal though late oats are light in western and northern areas. Second crop hay ranges from light to failure in half to two thirds of state. In Ames Ray Murray warns drought relief is needed with a four-point program and requests for drought relief areas must go through county officials. The only bright spot is good wheat and oats in many areas and first hay cut.
