Iowa City Council rejects Hickory Hill development
The Iowa City Council voted down rezoning for Hickory Trail Estates after earlier approvals, citing a through street plan not aligning with the Northeast district plan. Only two members supported. Mayor Teague and Janice Weiner switched to oppose, amid extensive resident opposition and concerns about park impact.

Armored MRAP to stay in toolbox as council weighs options
Johnson County and Iowa City leaders debate the future of the MRAP armored transport SUV bought in 2014. Seven deployments by the Iowa City Police Department included a May south district search warrant and two hundred fifty thousand dollar price tag for alternatives. Residents, including local organizers, say the vehicle is traumatic and unnecessary, while officials argue it is needed for high risk operations and active shooter responses. The council will revisit the issue at the next work session on August 17.
