Varley warns FCC rate hike will cut Iowa phone use

Iowa Commerce Commission Chairman Andrew Varley warned the FCC's plan to raise local service charges will raise residential bills to about $8 a month by 1989 and could cause 3 to 5 percent of Iowans to drop telephone service. He called the shift tragic for small towns as rates rise in stages through 1989 to cover a $10.7 billion subsidy. He noted long distance cannot operate without local lines and urged caution as universality is threatened.

Farris offers to help locate murder weapon

Cedar Rapids man Farris, convicted of three counts of first degree murder, reportedly told sheriff's deputies he would show where a garbage bag containing the knife used to kill Jacalyn May and her two children could be found. Michael Rohn, once a co defendant, offered to help but was acquitted.
