Brown Swiss Exhibit Shines at Waukon Fair

Seventy head of cattle were shown Tuesday in the Brown Swiss Canton No 1 show at the Allamakee County fairgrounds in Waukon. Harvey Love of Fairbank won both senior and grand champions and led the herd bound for the state dairy show at the All-Iowa fair in Cedar Rapids August 14 to 21.

Hartman Urges Better Use Of Iowa Timber Resources

Prof. G. B. Hartman of Iowa State University told the WARTMAN Cedar Rapids Kiwanis club that about 7.3 percent of Iowa is timberland and much of it is poorly managed. He noted private ownership of 98.5 percent of 2.62 million acres, strong economic output from lumber and wood products, and that better management could yield higher returns.

Iowa 1960 Lamb Crop Tops Ten Year Average

DES MOINES The 1960 Iowa lamb crop totaled 1 024 000 head an increase of 4 percent from 983 000 last year and 35 percent above the 1949-58 average of 756 000. Breeding ewes 1 year old and older reached 931 000 head up 2 percent from a year earlier and 34 percent above the 696 000 average. Lambs saved per 100 ewes aged 1 year and over on Jan 1 were 110, up from 108 last year and equal to the prior two years. The 1960 U S lamb crop was 21 584 000 head, 2 percent above 1959 and 1 percent above the 1949-58 average. The number of lambs saved per 100 ewes 1 year and older was 95, one point below last year and three points above the average. Breeding ewes on Jan 1 totaled 3 percent above 1959. Ewe lambs under 1 year were 2 percent above January 1, 1959.

Keokuk county 4 H girls demonstration contest honored top pairs Tuesday. Maxine Abrams and Karen Lippard won first for bread making, with Janice Kiefer and Mildred Meier second for a dessert demonstration. Junior division first went to Sue Strong and Karlene Fischer, second to Mary Wehr and Barbara Shirk. Judges were Helena Dilger and Mary Sue Wolf.

Butter Production Declined in 1959

The Foreign Agricultural Service reports 31 countries produced 10.1 billion pounds of butter in 1959, down 1 percent from 1958. Despite the dip, output remained 11 percent above the 1951-55 average.
