Congress weighs energy, housing, and aid bills this week
The House will take up energy measures and a gender pay bill while the Senate debates a housing rescue package HR 3221 and the Low Income Energy Assistance Program. The House approved a $25 billion standby bailout for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, broad mortgage relief, tax breaks, and new oversight. The same week, a failed two thirds vote on the Strategic Petroleum Reserve drawdown and a $50 billion AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis fund passed. Senate action includes bridge safety, oil market oversight, and debt-limit adjustments amid partisan debate involving McCain and Obama. Key lawmakers and offices are listed.
