Johnson wins pole at Brickyard as Martin eyes win
Mark Martin stunned by saying he would end his 97 race winless stretch at Indianapolis and earned second, while Jimmie Johnson claimed the pole with 181.763 mph. Johnson called Martin's confidence bold and expected him to be a major threat in the Allstate 400. Martin downplayed the guarantee, saying he aims to be strong and that top tens in practice support his stance. Ryan Newman lined up third, with Kasey Kahne and Jeff Gordon close behind as Tony Stewart was 14th and Kyle Busch 19th.
