Iowa faces a sharp upturn in rabies reports with thirty people in Emmetsburg Sioux City and Council Bluffs receiving anti rabies shots after animal exposures. Health officials say the outbreaks are probably coincidental and urge pet immunization and prompt post exposure care.
The Iowa Supreme Court rejected Clayton County's appeal on an $875,000 verdict awarded to Andrew E. Schmitt, a former Elkader man paralyzed in a 1973 traffic crash. With a $500,000 insurance limit, county property owners may cover about $375,000, per a court official. Schmitt, 23, has lived in an Independence care center since the accident northeast of Elkader. The suit claimed negligence for missing road signs or a speed limit at a sharp curve. The trial occurred in Dubuque County to avoid potential bias.
UPI reported that U.S. Attorney Roxanne Conlin closed the state case with testimony from Roger Gilbert the Iowa National Guard commander who said Joseph May was warned in 1977 to curb travel on Guard aircraft and that Gilbert notified Gov Ray's office months before Ray ordered a formal Army inquiry linked to May's resignation as adjutant general.
