Thousands return to work as London dockers gain release, then unions plan a national strike starting Friday. Delegates vote 39 to 29 backing the dock action amid a widening fight over the government’s new labor laws.

Willard F Rockwell Jr said more than 50 percent of the work will be outsourced to 10 000 subcontractors. The contract value about 3.5 billion and up to 160 000 jobs over six years. NASA chose Rockwell over three other finalists. Shuttles launch vertically from Cape Kennedy for civilian missions and from Vandenberg AFB for military flights.
Thomas Eagleton rejected claims that he had been arrested for drunk or reckless driving at a Honolulu news conference. He refused to withdraw from the ticket with George McGovern, while columnist Jack Anderson charged photostats exist showing multiple traffic-related arrests from the 1960s. Official police records show speeding tickets and a 1963 one-car accident, none involving alcohol.
A House Commerce Committee plan seeks an 18 month moratorium on all state and local air passenger taxes for interstate or foreign flights and authorizes a Civil Aeronautics Board probe.
