Danube dam project underway by Yugoslavia and Romania
Yugoslav and Romanian engineers begin work on the Djerdap high dam across the Iron Gates on the Danube in a $400 million effort. First concrete blocks to be placed by Wednesday, with completion aimed for late 1971 and an annual output of about 12.3 billion kWh. The project prompts major relocations, highway and railway reconstructions, and archaeological relocations of an 8,000‑year‑old site at Lepenske Vir.
