Iraqi forces fired a surface to air missile at a U S U 2 spy plane patrolling southern Iraq during Operation Southern Watch. The U 2 was not hit and the crew reported a concussion from the blast. Officials say attacks on patrol planes have become more common.

Cedar Rapids city faces questions over a proposed Hy-Vee urban store along First Avenue. The plan would require about 1 million upfront for land and exterior work, with costs recouped over 20 years via property tax increases, a TIF approach Hanson says differs from typical projects. A Hy-Vee representative will meet with city officials to seek a reduced city role before an August public hearing. If approved, the store could open next spring.
