Washington AP The Federal Trade Commission launches a study to assess if ads for over the counter medicines and other products fuel the nation’s rising drug abuse problem. Sen. Frank Moss says the inquiry will examine advertising deception, authority scope, and potential coordinated government programs with results due by Sept. 1.

Ainsworth residents Jeannette Gesling 43 was killed in a two car crash six miles east of Washington Iowa on highway 92. Gesling’s one year old daughter Kelley was in critical condition at Iowa City hospital. Mary Putman and her passenger Maria Wood both from Ainsworth sustained injuries and shock respectively.
A one car crash on U S 20 near Freeport injured and killed two navy petty officers from Great Lakes. Kenneth H Harms 25 of Lake View Iowa was killed and Donald R Denning 34 of Des Moines Iowa was seriously injured. Authorities suspect they were en route home when the crash occurred.
The coroner's office tentatively identified the victim as Ronald A. Sorenson, 23, of Des Moines, found floating under the Golden Gate bridge near a sign reading I need a place to crash. Authorities said the man did not appear to have jumped from the bridge.
Iowa Republicans at the state convention rejected a peace amendment urging Nixon to set a date to end the Vietnam war. The convention endorsed the party platform backing Nixon’s Vietnam policy and Vietnamization, while ROTC on campuses and housing referendum repeal proposals gained support from a youth faction and other delegates. The abortion plank remained contested though ultimately retained.
Senate Democrats called Nixon claim of excessive spending erroneous and unfounded and pledged large reductions in administration spending. They urged shifting priorities to health education environmental and poverty programs while trimming military and foreign aid. Senate Leader Mansfield noted an $8.3 billion cut from Nixon's initial budget and predicted further reductions as spending requests are reviewed.

Private Douglas McVay 20 of Cedar Rapids is wounded for the second time in Vietnam. The 101st Airborne soldier suffered an ear injury in night combat west of Hue after five months in country. He was first wounded in June.
