Think Fuel Shortage Blamed in Lema Crash
Federal aviation experts suspect a fuel shortage caused the single engine failure in the twin engine plane crash that killed golf star Tony Lema, his wife, and two crew members near the Illinois Indiana line. The aircraft reportedly had both engines out at impact during the National PGA tour flight from Akron Ohio. Civil Aeronautics Board officials led by Noel Lawson noted the unusual loss of power in both engines. Nearly $23 000 in checks and English pound notes found in Lema ledger were shipped to San Leandro California for safekeeping. Funeral services were planned for the Joliet pilot Mrs Doris Mutlen 43 and co pilot Dr George Bard 41. The pilot was married to radiologist Dr Wayne Mutlen who operated Joliet Air Charter Service.
