Seven-Year-Old Vernon Boy Near Drowning at Ellis Park Pool
Allen Childs seven, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Childs, nearly drowned Sunday at Ellis park pool. He was found unconscious in seven feet of water at 4 p.m. Guard Lloyd Brown pulled him out, administered CPR until an ambulance arrived, and he was later taken to St Luke's hospital in fair condition. Parents say the incident occurred during a family precinct at the park and the boy, unable to swim, had been warned to stay in shallow water. The manner of entry into the deep area is unknown.

An 18 year old Cedar Rapids youth was charged with car theft after a high speed pursuit east of Marion on Mt. Vernon road SE.
