Prison Industries reshapes Iowa sites for efficiency and training
The Rockwell City plant becomes a furniture assembly site while Fort Madison focuses on precision wood cutting, marking Prison Industries first presence at Rockwell City. The shift lowers Fort Madison staff from 140 to 70 and adds 60 jobs in Rockwell City, with inmates set to log 1.7 million training hours this year. Inmates earn 45 to 50 cents hourly, with raises after three months, and the program aims to reduce security concerns and layoffs while boosting post-release skills. The overall system still sees Fort Madison handling clothes, soaps, and tourism inquiries, with other facilities performing Braille book printing, license plates, CD-ROM work, and commissary management.
