Mars Figures Power Modes Affect Viking Transmission
Mars figures show Viking lander operated in 30 watt mode for two hours of clear photos while 1 watt mode on Thursday and Friday limited data. Landers relay to orbiter then to Earth. Scientists consider a random failure. JPL will retry freeing the seismometer and scooping arm if needed early next week and Sunday morning to collect soil samples from undisturbed ground.
