About 400 South Vietnamese paratroopers entered the Quang Tri citadel taking fire from North Vietnamese defenders. Army officials cautioned that not all of the fortress was under Vietnamese control as bombardment and house to house fighting continued in the city.
U S command phased out more than 3000 additional troops including the last American combat forces in the Saigon region. The move removed 19 army units from the rolls from a combat infantry battalion to a scout dog platoon with the major units listed.

Four Independence women escaped after a car crashed into a house and exploded short after midnight Monday. Police report Karen Fernau 40 drove Lenora Scott 30 to Alma Lawless 52 mother’s home. Fernau says pedal stuck, swerved to miss a pole, car hit northeast wall and exploded in a bedroom. Mrs Lawless was in the residence.
U S Bureau of Mines records show nearly 500 federal safety citations against Consolidation Coal Co's Blacksville No 1 mine in four years of operation. Nine workers were reported dead after a fire and explosions prompted rescues and shaft sealing.
The U S Senate defeated a 1.785 billion military aid bill tied to a Vietnam Indo- China pullout. A 48 to 42 vote killed the aid, with a 50-45 margin to halt funds for combat in Vietnam Laos and Cambodia in four months if prisoners are released.
State Auditor Lloyd Smith issued a special audit showing a shortage of 19 677 in Clayton County Treasurer James L. Peters records. The audit accuses Peters of converting tax money to his own use over seven years by recording taxes inconsistently and omitting funds and credits taxes. Checks deposited by Peters in an Elkader bank from December to mid March were traced, revealing 11 payments with no record of tax receipt. Peters allegedly covered one taxpayer tax with another’s check. Probate files were reviewed to identify any omitted moneys and credits taxes.
The Iowa Supreme Court refused to block Attorney General Richard Turner from enforcing gambling laws at state and local fairs this summer while appeals proceed. The decision leaves in place Turner's plan to target carnival games charging fees and awarding prizes. organizers vow to pursue further appeal.

Former President Lyndon Johnson, who had a major heart attack in April, was flown to Brooke General Hospital in San Antonio after experiencing chest pains. The hospital said he was comfortable and in excellent spirits with a satisfactory overall condition while accompanied by his wife.
