Vilsack cites higher average pay for new Iowa jobs
Governor Tom Vilsack announced a survey showing new jobs created by Iowa economic development programs paid an average of 18.09 dollars per hour in 2001, up from 14.12 the prior year. He said the data countered claims that the programs only attract low-wage workers and urged a statewide immigration debate. He emphasized focusing on high paying jobs to attract young Iowans back to the state and spur growth. A national anti immigration group began campaigns in Fort Dodge Mason City and Storm Lake as part of designated model communities.
