Partial farm relief cuts hit seven Midwest states
In seven midwestern states a partial discontinuance of work relief took effect as the government urged unemployed workers to help in harvest fields. South Dakota joined last, striking 19 000 family heads from relief as farmers complained they could not hire men. The Agriculture Department said demand for harvest hands rose, with wages averaging 1.41 dollars a day and a top of 2.25. Relief clients argued low harvest pay versus 40 cents an hour on federal projects deterred them from fieldwork. Town, one of the seven states, halted aid for able bodied workers in about twenty counties and told them to seek harvest work.
