Caltech drilled at sacred Volcanic Tablelands site in 2017
Caltech faculty and students used a portable drill at the Volcanic Tablelands near Bishop California to extract core samples from a protected rock art site. The act led to a violation investigation under the Archaeological Resources Protection Act and a $25,465 payment to the Interior Department for damages. University leaders vowed outreach for proper permits and education. UT Dallas also faced penalties in 2018 for unauthorized drilling at a rock art site near the Nevada border.
