Deere Plans More Layoffs Amid Slow Agricultural Demand
John Deere, based in Moline Illinois, announced 140 production layoffs at the East Moline Harvester plant effective Sept. 6, bringing total idle production to over 2,000 as sales dip. The firm projects a 10 percent drop in global sales for fiscal 2016. Farmers face lower income as corn and soy prices fall, constraining demand for combines and tractors. Exports remain a major earnings source but falter with a stronger dollar and softer foreign markets.
