Former Northern Iowa quarterback and two time NFL MVP Kurt Warner will appear in ESPN program Homecoming with Rick Reilly at 6 tonight. Warner hosted segments taped in Cedar Rapids when Reilly visited his hometown. A UNI news release later corrected the show's time.
The University of Iowa football team hosts its annual Kids at Kinnick day on August 15. Gates open at 11 a.m. and practice starts at noon. Admission is free. Fans enter via gates A B and E. Concessions roster cards and limited schedule items will be available.
Culvers of Coralville faces Jill Armstrong of Lepic Kroeger Realtors for the Prime Time League title at 6 p.m. Monday in the North Liberty Community Center. Culvers beat Imprinted Sportswear Goodfellow Printing 101 93 behind Kaylon Williams 20 points. Jill Armstrong won 99 89 over Vin ton Merchants with 27 points.
Cedar Rapids Kernels lost 2-1 to Beloit in 10 innings after a groundout in the bottom of the 10th. Gabe Jacobo tied the game in the ninth with a triple driving in Alexia Amarista. Christian Scholl gave up the loss pitching the ninth and 10th.
Veteran players like Henderson Moore and Price collide with current Iowa and Northern Iowa standouts in a PTL playoff game. Moore scored 27 with two breakaway dunks, Henderson added 22, and Price 11 as returning pros chase ongoing competition and love of the game.
In Cedar Rapids the Benton Community Bobcats defeated Marion 7 0 in a Class 3A substate final at Kennedy High School. Ethan Brown earned the win with eight strikeouts as Benton improved to 35 6 and advanced to the state tournament in Des Moines. Tony Stenberg contributed three doubles and an RBI.
Cedar Rapids Washington senior Mitch Dostal scores from third on a Jon Keller wild pitch with none out in the bottom of the seventh for a 2-1 win over Xavier. Washington advances to the 4A state tournament at Principal Park, extending its win streak to 17 and setting up a showdown with Iowa City West. Keller pitched seven strong innings, fanning 10, while Chad Christensen homered in the fourth for Xavier.
In Strawberry Point Backbone Golf and Country Club celebrated as a small, affordable course near Backbone State Park. The 60 plus year old 9 hole layout boasts mature trees, quick greens, and a friendly clubhouse with burgers and beer. Club president Jess Jarman notes manageable debt and steady membership.
