Heat waves bite East Iowa as workers face dangerous conditions with rising temperatures and humidity. Officials urge hydration and rest breaks while employers adjust schedules and provide cooling measures to protect outdoor and indoor staff.
The forecast calls for high 94 in Cedar Rapids and 95 in Iowa City today with heat index around 100. Sunday may reach 98 Cedar Rapids and 102 Iowa City with similar heat. Historical highs include Cedar Rapids 100 on July 13 1995 and Iowa City 101 on August 20 2003.
Drink fluids and avoid alcohol as heat risks rise. Stay indoors in air conditioning, take cool showers, wear light clothing, and check on elderly neighbors. Do not leave people or animals in parked cars. Limit outdoor activity to cooler times and use hats sunglasses and SPF 15 or higher.
USGS reports record or near record lows in Wells tapping the Silurian-Devonian aquifers in northern Johnson County. Rural homeowners may face pumps running dry as levels fall below current pump depths, risking overheating and costly repairs. USGS has monitored about 40 wells since 1995, with some measured even longer.
