Census figures show Cedar Rapids down but Linn County up

Unofficial Census Bureau data indicate Cedar Rapids population at 105,578, down from 110,642 in 1970, while Linn County rises to 163,383 from 163,213. Davenport 101,320. Iowa City up slightly to 49,489. Hiawatha leads suburb growth, Ely up 52.7 percent. Coggon Central City and Alburnett show declines. Local officials may file corrections within 10 days.

New glowing crater spotted after Mount St Helens eruptions

A large glowing pit was seen on Mount St Helens after a sequence of eruptions that hurled ash 11 miles into the air and drifted into Canada. Seismic activity ended after the final blasts, with ash plumes reaching up to 60 000 feet and 50 000 feet in successive eruptions. No injuries were reported, and Cougar evacuated as a precaution.
