Heins Urges Sewer Rate Rise To Cut Bond Taxes
Cedar Rapids City Council discussed raising sewer rental rates from 50 to 70 percent of the minimum water bill to reduce sewer bond taxes. City Treasurer William R. Heins showed a chart claiming higher sewer revenues would offset tax levy cuts, potentially lowering overall bills from 63.70 to 59.84 for a 500 dollar property tax. The council directed Heins to work with Finance Commissioner Stewart Shank on a detailed chart while tabling a proposed general water rate increase. The water department’s long term expansion and operation costs require rates, with the plan marking the first rise in ten years.
