Cedar Rapids city council urged action to have railroads repair grade crossings described as in terrible shape. Finance Commissioner Burgus pushed a resolution calling for a survey by city engineers to identify repairs and notify rail operators to address dangerous crossings citywide.
President Truman calls for pay as you go budgeting and at least 10 billion dollars in new taxes to curb inflation. He outlines six long standing requests including defense plant authority, consumer credit controls, commodity margin powers, a fair wage policy, rent control, and the St Lawrence Seaway project. He warns that relaxing controls could widen the inflationary gap and rekindle price wage spirals.
Robert E. Heskett, 55, described by friends as the ex husband of Betty MacDonald, author of The Egg and I, was fatally stabbed in a knife and hatchet confrontation. Thomas J. Blake, 37, Visalia, was booked for murder investigation after the dispute with Blake’s ex wife Thelma, 35, who had been living with Heskett. Blake reportedly arrived at Heskett’s home about midnight Saturday leading to the deadly argument.
Capt. Lloyd C. Schuknecht Jr. of Cedar Rapids leaped into a river in Taipei on July 14 to save two Chinese girls from drowning. The incident, reported by Reuters, made front pages as locals hailed the hero. He served in World War II and Korea, earning the Bronze Star, and is now on overseas duties in Tokyo.
Dr. William Hitrec, a 38 year old Yugoslav physician with history in Italy and Venezuela, won Floyd county circuit court permission to take Virginia state medical board exams this winter after earlier licensing hurdles. He and his wife Joanne and son Bill settled in Floyd County seeking a home and practice, aided by a court ruling granting exam access.
The Iowa Executive Council authorized 150000 shares of new stock for the merger of Iowa Electric Light and Power Co of Cedar Rapids with Central States Electric Co. The stock will be issued to Central States shareholders, with 107168 common and 37444 preferred shares. The merger and stock issue go to Central States stockholders for approval.
The Cedar Rapids Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will present a chalice in memory of Thomas L. Fitzsimmons who died recently. Rev. J. A. Breitbach will make the presentation after a dinner at 7 p.m. at the Roosevelt hotel for members and wives.
A car owned by Doris Miller of 96 Second Avenue SW Cedar Rapids was stolen Sunday evening. It was rolled off the highway into Mud Creek near Norway and found upside down by Mr and Mrs Art Pickart of Norway around 10 p.m. The thief escaped injury.
Stella Pudil Benda 65 of 1802 J Street SW died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 9 22 p m Saturday. Born in Swisher she moved to Cedar Rapids four years ago and was a member of Circle No 2 of St James Methodist church She was first married to Charles Pudil in Swisher Jan 30 1930 who died Sept 22 1946 and then to James Benda June 25 1950 who survives Also surviving are her mother Mrs Frances Castek two daughters Mrs George Petrik and Mrs Lumir Clask three brothers Joseph Castek of Cedar Rapids route 2 Frank and Aldrich of Swisher five sisters Mrs Agnes Marak Mrs Charles Petrak Mrs Vic tor Holec of Cedar Rapids Mrs John Marak of Swisher and Mrs Lamir Jansa of Iowa City Services will be held 1 30 p m Wednesday at Barta Hesser chapel with Rev Keith Irwin Olivet Presbyterian Church Burial will be in Bohemian National cemetery Friends may call at the chapel.
Marie Dvorak 97 of 1028 Sixteenth Avenue SE widow of Vaclav Dvorak died at home after a lingering illness. Born January 21 1854 in Czechoslovakia she came to the United States in 1874 and resided in Cedar Rapids the last 72 years. Survivors include five daughters two sons 24 grandchildren 31 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren. She was a member of the Rosary Society Christian Mothers of St Wenceslaus church and Cesky Vlastenky lodge. Kuba funeral home is in charge with funeral arrangements to be announced later.
John T. Rosburg died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 4 20 a m after a brief illness. Born March 2 1866 in Benton county he moved to Cedar Rapids four years ago. Surviving wife Emma a daughter Mrs M L Struesky and a granddaughter. He was associated with Wagner Rosburg Mercantile Company at Newhall for 30 years before retirement six years ago. Burial at Cedar Memorial cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel after 11 a m Tuesday.
Mary A Cooper 72 widow of Samuel Cooper of Cedar Rapids died in a local hospital Saturday. Born April 6 1879 in Dodgeville Wisconsin she lived in Cedar Rapids 50 years. Survived by two stepdaughters two brothers a sister and many grandchildren. Services Tuesday 1:30 pm Teahen chapel led by Rev Frank Ward burial Linwood Cemetery friends may call chapel.
Funeral services for Mrs Bernard Webster of 358 Sixteenth Street SE will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Barta-Hesser chapel conducted by Dr. Marvin B. Kober. Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial cemetery. Friends may visit at the chapel beforehand.
The body of miner William Torvinen 38 was recovered Sunday from the Bennett iron mine after a cave in Friday at the 200-foot level. The other miner Joe Ozich 62 was rescued and is in the hospital. Torvinen leaves a wife and three daughters.

Cedar Rapids police hunt a young gunman who robbed parking garage attendant Everett Edwards of 76.42 then forced him into a trunk and drove off in a stolen Pontiac. The car was later abandoned near Hart’s service station as other thefts were noted in the area.
A Cedar Rapids woman phoned police at 1 20 a m Sunday to report two men loitering near the Underwood service station on B avenue NE. As she spoke to the attendant she heard glass break. Police found a restroom window smashed but the prowlers had fled.
LaPlant Choate Manufacturing workers met for about an hour Monday morning over a discharge matter from a month earlier. The employees returned to work before noon. Company and union officials declined to comment.
A prisoner identified as Guy Karsner walked away from the Anamosa men's reformatory farm on Saturday. Police believe he fled in a red convertible after Delbert Brickley reported his car stolen. the vehicle was later found in a gully near the farm. Karsner, 40, had a 25 year robbery with aggravation sentence in 1931 and about five months remaining to serve.
Five Cedar Rapids police officers were named to represent the department at the annual state police pistol shoot at Camp Dodge next Sunday. Detective Inspector Frank Bukacek said the team will travel to Des Moines Saturday for practice before the Sunday competition, with members J Do Hollister, Robert McDermott, and Peter Funcke among those listed. Cedar Rapids entries won many honors last year.

Robert C. Stout of Lisbon received a three year sentence to the Anamosa men's reformatory for a third drunk driving conviction. Robert M. Bachman of 16400 Avenue NE paid a $300 fine as a first offender. Stout’s arrest followed pursuit by Mt. Vernon residents and city marshal Ed Gill. Bachman was arrested near Cedar Rapids after being followed by John Tucker and had his fine arranged as $50 down and $50 monthly.
A 26 year old Cedar Rapids man Charles Huster received an indeterminate sentence not to exceed ten years in Fort Madison prison for robbery. He pled guilty to the lesser charge and was jailed on a 3000 dollar bond. Hammond reported Huster struck him with a two by two board and took 30 dollars after drinking.
Judge Charles Penningroth ruled Clarence Musel failed to prove Gladys Louise Musel neglected the children. The decision found the mother using support money for the kids and willing to provide a home, with a suggestion to keep better expense records for future disputes.
The Cedar Rapids Airways, Inc. files suit against August C. Happel to quiet title to a farm parcel and set a reasonable rental for the year starting March 1. The suit argues the purchase option claimed by Happel is invalid since it depended on a further agreement that was never created.
Linn county clerk and sheriff offices will close Tuesday afternoon for the funeral of Mrs Bernard Webster daughter of Sheriff James H Smith. The sheriff’s office will remain closed for the entire afternoon and Court Clerk Arthur Axmear said he expects to close that office for the dry of the afternoon at
Wills of Eliza P. Barnoske and Walter B. Strong admitted to probate in Linn county district court. George R. Barnoske named executor of the Barnoske will with no bond. Thelma I. Strong and Jean Strong named executrices with bond on the Strong will. Thelma receives one third of the estate and remaining assets go to five children Eileen Minor and Jean, with remainder split equally.
George Crawford Doris Mae Crawford and Ruth Anne Crawford Custom Decorators file suit Monday against Leslie Bright Minnie Bright and Ada Stewart for 122.74 for painting the defendants house the work allegedly unfinished. Two district court dismissals involve Davies Motors versus Forrest Vaughn and Catherine Ellen Dimond versus Forest Fay Dimond in a divorce. A 500 attachment against John E Goemaat goods was ordered in a divorce case by Jane Goemaat and he is enjoined from molesting the plaintiff and children. A court order allows Hilda C Medinger and Elmer F P Medinger to marry after the order date.
Flash floods in central Illinois near Quincy caused nearly one million dollars in damage. Electrical storms overran rivers and creeks flooding roads, farmlands, and homes. Indian Grove drainage district saw over 15,000 acres of crops inundated after three levees cracked, while Marblehead recorded about 1,000 acres underwater.
The senate passed a bill barring reprisals against military personnel and government employees who testify before congressional investigations. Sponsored by Nixon Taft McCarran and Wherry the measure would make dismissing or disciplining an underling for testifying unlawful. It follows agitation after President Truman fired Admiral Denfeld amid the naval air force controversy over strategic bombing.

In Troy New York tenants once resisted evictions by disguising as Indians to ambush sheriffs and agents delivering dispossession notices. Reports from historian Dr Albert B Corey recount that tar and feathering greeted those who served notices in the old days.
Five members of a Barrie Ontario family drowned when a motorboat overturned during a Sunday night reunion on Lake Simcoe. The 90 foot deep lake incident claimed the lives of the relatives, prompting investigations and grief in the community.
Safety Commission chief Edward A. Prochaska urged Cedar Rapids city council to study lighting for dark downtown alleys. In Centerville district court Mrs. Eloise Scarlett 32 pleaded innocent to first degree murder in the April slayings of her two children, Harry Scarlett Jr. 11 and Doris Maxine 9. Judge Edward L. Simmons set trial for September. she remains jailed without bond after signing a statement claiming she fatally shot her son and then beat her daughter in a despondent mood over a broken marriage.
Everett Builta, 33, of 4430 Center Point Road NE, treated at St Luke's hospital after midnight Saturday for facial lacerations. He said four men jumped him in front of the Market Inn, then fled in a car. he could not describe the assailants or vehicle.
