Kayla Symonette, 10, from Cedar Rapids, completed a four week College Community summer program in reading and math. The intensive two hour daily sessions helped her gain reading skills and feel ready for middle school. The district ran 985 students, over 200 more than last year, the largest metro area program.
After years of effort Cedar Rapids moves toward a new 255000 square foot federal courthouse with about 15 million in initial funding within a 500 million Senate bill. Mayor Clancey and Sen. Harkin announced outside the 70 year old building noting the project will progress with site planning over three years and the remaining 55 million to follow in future spending. The city would also seek to redevelop the old courthouse into commercial office space with a riverfront pedestrian terrace.
