A University of Iowa led consortium plans a major transportation study program using computer aided design to develop future ground vehicle technologies. The project aims for up to 45 million dollars in annual work with partners including Kirkwood Community College Ford Motor Co Caterpillar Inc University of Michigan and Rock Island Arsenal. A truck simulator would be housed at Kirkwood in Cedar Rapids with cost up to 2 million dollars and may train drivers and defensive driving. If funded work could start Oct 1 with locations across the consortium and about 25 members.
Iowa couple Dan and Cara Schmidt ask the Supreme Court to halt delays that have blocked a reunion with their daughter Jessica now with the DeBoers in Michigan. The Schmidts contend the DeBoers interfered with return and argue the baby was never legally available for adoption. Justice Stevens may decide on a stay while the case appeals to the high court.
