Custom Rates Fall Short Of Rising Equipment Costs
University of Illinois studies show custom charges up 11 percent since 1947 while direct costs of owning and operating machines jump 58 percent. Hay acres per baler rose from 54 in 1959 after 130 in 1950, and corn acreage per picker fell from 116.7 to 92.3, creating many potential custom operators and suggesting rates may reflect marginal rather than total costs.
